Heritage Livestock
We are dedicated to the recovery of
heritage livestock breeds that have been slowly and silently
disappearing due to "factory" farming practices.
Heritage livestock breeds are interesting from many
perspectives. They are more beautiful than their commercial
counterparts and often produce multiple products such as wool, meat,
and milk from the same animal. The meat of heritage livestock is
far tastier and often healthier than that of commercial breeds.
Heritage livestock breeds are also a valuable source of natural
genetic diversity that should not disappear.
Movements
to bring back these Heritage breeds also endorse natural, free-range
livestock care and natural feeding methods. We believe that you should know where your food comes
from. The animals you eat should live happy, natural lives and
get to experience natural behaviors. They should eat
natural things with ample opportunity to forage.
Navajo-Churro
Sheep
 |
Many
thanks to
Bide a Wee Farms and
Puddleduck Farms both of Oregon for allowing us to purchase our
starter flock. These sheep have quite a history being the
first breed introduced into the United States. They have wool
prized by hand weavers, tasty meat, and good milk production.
We decided upon the breed due to our love of Spanish sheep's cheese
- we found out it was made primarily from the milk of the Spanish Churro - the foundation stock for the original Navajo-Churro
sheep. Navajo-Churro are listed as "threatened" on
the ALBC list.

Turkeys
 |
Our
flock includes Narragansett, Spanish Black, and Bourbon Red turkeys. We
have joined the growing number of small farmers who raise these beautiful
and elegant birds. Narragansett are considered
"threatened" and Spanish Black are considered
"critical" on the ALBC list. |

Chickens
 |
There
are so many breeds of chickens it was hard to choose a breed to focus
on. We chose several that were listed as "critical"
such as the Buttercup, Sumatra, and White Faced Black Spanish.
We also have several other breeds because they are just so much fun.
|
Naturally Raised Hogs
 |
We naturally and humanely raise rare breeds of hogs for meat.
Our Heritage hog is called the Tamworth and is prized for lean meat
and excellent bacon. The Berkshire hog is the gourmet's hog.
Internationally
recognized as producing extremely flavorful meat - it is known as Kurobuta in Japan and much sought after.

Rabbits
 |
We raise the American rabbit - the rarest of
recognized rabbit breeds. There are approximately 300 breeding
rabbits in the United States. Once prized for meat and fur
production we are helping other dedicated breeders re-establish the
breed.
